SM Datum

Coordinate Converter

Convert coordinates between Degrees–Minutes–Seconds (DMS) and Decimal Degrees — a DMS to DD converter, a decimal to DMS converter, and a free-form latitude/longitude parser in one place. Convert latitude and longitude together, following the WGS84 datum (EPSG:4326) and ISO 6709 notation conventions. Provide one or both — whichever you leave blank is simply left blank in the result.

Batch processing (convert many coordinates at once from a file) — launching soon.

Coordinates are validated against the WGS84 ellipsoid (EPSG:4326). Latitude range: −90° to 90°. Longitude range: −180° to 180°.

Frequently Asked Questions

What coordinate formats are supported?

Degrees-Minutes-Seconds (e.g. 40°41'21.5"N), Decimal Degrees (e.g. 40.689306), and free-form strings in several common notations including colon-separated and space-separated formats.

Can I convert latitude and longitude at the same time?

Yes — enter both, or just one and leave the other blank; it's simply left blank in the result rather than causing an error.

What datum/coordinate reference system is used?

WGS84 (EPSG:4326), the standard used by GPS and most web mapping, following ISO 6709 notation conventions.

Is this free to use for commercial or professional work?

Yes, free for any use. For larger conversion jobs or custom GIS workflows, Sagarmekhla GIS Consultancy offers professional GIS and remote sensing services.

How do I convert DMS to decimal degrees, or decimal to DMS?

Use the DMS → Decimal tab to enter a Degrees-Minutes-Seconds value and get Decimal Degrees back, or the Decimal → DMS tab to go the other way. Both happen instantly in your browser — no file upload or software install needed.

What's the difference between this and a CRS converter?

This tool converts between coordinate notations — DMS, Decimal Degrees, and free-form strings — within the same WGS84 datum. To reproject data between different coordinate reference systems (like UTM zones, State Plane, or another datum entirely), use CRS Converter instead.

Automating coordinate conversion across many files in Python? GIS Automation Toolkit (Book 1 of the SM Datum Toolkit Series) includes ready-to-run ArcPy and PyQGIS scripts for batch coordinate reprojection — see GIS Automation Toolkit.
